Shared Leads vs. Exclusive Leads for Contractors

By Cesar Contreras · July 30, 2026

Every contractor runs into this choice. Buy leads from a marketplace, or build your own. Here is the plain version of both.

What is a shared lead?

A shared lead is a homeowner inquiry sold to several contractors at the same time. You pay per lead. So do the other three or four companies who got it.

You are buying a chance to compete, not a customer.

What is an exclusive lead?

An exclusive lead comes to you and nobody else. The homeowner searched, found your business, looked at your reviews and your work, and contacted you directly.

You are not one of four options. You are the one they picked.

Which one actually costs more?

Shared leads cost less per lead and more per job. Here is the math most contractors never run.

  • Shared: $50 a lead, you win one in eight. That is $400 per booked job, plus the hours you spent on the seven you lost.
  • Exclusive: $150 a lead, you win one in three. That is $450 per booked job, with far fewer wasted calls.

Those look close until you count your time. Seven dead calls take hours. And the shared jobs you do win are usually won on price, so they pay less.

Why do shared leads turn into price fights?

Because the homeowner is talking to four companies who all showed up the same way. Nothing separates you except the number at the bottom of the quote.

With an exclusive lead, the homeowner already saw your finished work and your reviews before they called. You start the conversation as the company they want, not one of four names.

When does buying shared leads make sense?

There are two real cases. If you are brand new and have no visibility yet, shared leads keep the lights on while you build something better. And if you have a slow week and free crew time, a few cheap leads can fill it.

The mistake is making them your only source. Shared leads stop the day you stop paying. Your own visibility keeps producing.

How do you start building exclusive leads?

Start with what you already own. Your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and your website do most of the work:

  • Fill out your Google profile completely and add real job photos.
  • Ask every happy customer for a review, every time.
  • Make sure your website loads fast and your phone number is easy to tap.
  • Add a page for each service and each town you cover.

None of that is complicated. It is just consistent. If you would rather have someone run it for you, see how our lead generation works or get a free visibility check-up.
