What Deck Builder Leads Actually Cost (And Why Exclusive Beats Shared)
Most deck builders shop for leads the same way they shop for lumber. They look for the lowest price per unit. That works for lumber. It does not work for leads.
Here is what deck builder leads actually cost, and how to work out the only number that matters.
How much does a deck builder lead cost?
Expect somewhere between $40 and $150 for a deck lead, depending on your area and how many builders are bidding. Shared lead sites sit at the low end. Leads from your own website and ads sit higher, but they behave very differently.
Price per lead is only half the story. A $40 lead you win one time in twenty costs you $800 per job. A $120 lead you win one time in four costs you $480. The cheap lead was the expensive one.
What is the difference between shared and exclusive leads?
A shared lead is sold to several builders at once. You get the same homeowner as three or four competitors, and you all call within minutes of each other.
An exclusive lead comes to you and nobody else. The homeowner found your business, on your website or your Google profile, and reached out to you on purpose.
That difference changes everything about the conversation:
- You are not racing anyone to the phone.
- You are not the fourth call that day, explaining the same things again.
- You are not bidding against three builders who are all cutting price to win.
- The homeowner already saw your work and your reviews before they called.
Why do shared leads push your price down?
When four builders call the same homeowner about the same deck, the homeowner learns one thing quickly: builders are easy to find and easy to replace. So the conversation becomes about price.
When one builder shows up, and that builder already looks like the best choice online, the conversation is about the work instead. Same homeowner. Very different job.
What number should you actually track?
Track cost per booked deck, not cost per lead. Take everything you spent in a month and divide it by the number of decks you actually sold.
Then compare that against your average job value. If a deck is worth $12,000 to you and your cost per booked deck is $600, you are doing fine, no matter what the lead price looked like.
How do you get exclusive deck leads?
You build them instead of buying them. That means showing up when someone nearby searches for a deck builder, having a Google profile with real photos and real reviews, and having a website that makes calling you easy.
It takes longer to start than buying a list. But it compounds. The list stops the day you stop paying. Your own visibility keeps working.
